The selection is rigorous, with only one out of a hundred selected tangerines. The selected tangerines are large in size, thick in skin, tight in texture, and free from insects, maggots, and mold spots. Those that have just ripened and are slightly yellowish are preferred. As a result, only 40% to 50%, or even 20 to 30, of high-quality tangerines weighing a hundred pounds are selected, just like an emperor selecting beautiful women to enter the palace. Selected tangerines, without meat and skin, are all opened into four petals and connected by stems like flowers. Impurities are removed, and they are stacked and placed in straw mats, marked with the year of storage.

Chen Liji has created a unique method for storing dried tangerine peel, which lasts for a hundred years without any insect or mold damage. It is light in weight and has a fragrant aroma. Only one exception occurred in the year Yimao of the Republic of China, when Guangzhou was hit by a massive flood. In the areas along the Yangtze River and low-lying areas, the flood was unpainted, walls and houses collapsed, and countless victims were left stranded in the streets. The tragic situation was unbearable, and the authorities were corrupt and incompetent, unable to do anything about people’s livelihoods. Compassionate individuals from the business community spontaneously sold goods for relief and disaster relief. In response to this, Chen Liji, the principal, carried forward the ancestral motto of “having a heart to help the world” and sold century old tangerine peel for sale at a price equivalent to that of gold. One or two tangerine peels and one or two gold pieces were still purchased by the wealthy and powerful due to competition. All proceeds from sales are used to provide relief to disaster victims. This move was then widely circulated as a beautiful story.
