The Mansonggong Tea Area belongs to Yibang Xiangming Township in the ancient Six Great Tea Mountains. Among the local teas of Yibang, Mansong tea is considered the best, giving rise to the saying, ‘Eat Mansong, see Yibang.’ In ancient times, the emperor designated Mansong tea from the Six Great Tea Mountains as tribute tea, while teas from other villages were not accepted. Mansong tea has a thick texture and delicious taste, with a sweet and fragrant flavor that is pleasant to the palate, leaving one clear-minded after drinking. The Mansong Gong Tea Area is named for its rich tea quality and a production yield of ‘100 dan of tribute tea annually.’

History of MansongMansong Village is a renowned location for tribute tea, situated in Xiangming Township, Mengla County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. Only Mansong tea was exclusively used as tribute tea for the emperor. According to historical records, the emperor specifically designated Mansong tea leaves as tribute tea, while tea from other villages was not accepted. Mansong tea has a thick texture and delicious taste, with a sweet and fragrant flavor that refreshes the mind after drinking. Therefore, tea farmers from other mountains had to purchase Mansong tea leaves to present to the emperor. The Mansong Royal Tea Garden is located in Xiangming Yi Township, consisting of three sections: Prince Mountain of Mansong, Beiyin Mountain, and a Dai village tea garden near Manla. Nowadays, there are very few ancient royal tea trees left, and the traditional tea-making techniques have not been passed down. However, the ancient charm of Mansong tea, characterized by its ‘high fragrance and mellow sweetness,’ still remains. Although the spring tea production is limited each year, tea enthusiasts continue to visit in great numbers, and the mountain roads leading into the village are filled with vehicles.

Place of OriginMansong originally belonged to the jurisdiction of the First Township of Yibang District. Historically, there was the old Mansong village, inhabited by the Xiangtang people, who were skilled in tea cultivation. Due to the high quality of Mansong tea, it was classified as tribute tea, with “100 dàn of tribute tea delivered annually.” It was once famous because of tribute tea, and its reputation spread far and wide, bringing honor to Yibang District at the time and promoting local tea production and sales. There is also the new Mansong village and the Mansong River (elevation 870 meters). Climbing to the top of Mansong Mountain is called “Prince Mountain.” “Prince Mountain” got its name because a prince with the surname Zhu lived there in history.

Characteristics of MansongThe greatest characteristic of Mansong tribute tea is its sweetness and smoothness. When drinking it, the mouth feels very sweet, and the throat feels very sweet, like drinking honey water. The tea is very strong and warming; even drinking a small amount can make the body feel hot, something that other tea mountains cannot compare with. It is truly the taste of royalty. According to the ‘Puerfu Gazetteer’ from the Daoguang period, starting from the 13th year of Yongzheng (1735), Puer tea was procured by the Yibang local officials (after Cao Dangzhai, by the local head) and Mansong tea from Yibang was designated as a special tea for the emperor.
