Lowering Blood LipidsDifferent teas have different health effects due to their varying components. Pu-erh tea has become a current research hotspot because of its remarkable effect in lowering blood lipids. Early studies have shown that Pu-erh tea can significantly reduce the levels of cholesterol esters and triglycerides in the plasma of mice, whereas green tea can only reduce the level of cholesterol esters and has no effect on triglycerides. The blood lipid-lowering effect of ripe Pu-erh tea is unique; its effect is not only better than raw Pu-erh tea but also superior to other teas. Ripe Pu-erh tea can significantly reduce the levels of low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides in plasma while raising the levels of high-density lipoprotein, with a clear dose-response relationship.Antioxidant EffectsPeroxides and reactive nitrogen species play important roles in human inflammatory processes. Inhibiting the production of nitric oxide and peroxides can prevent oxidation-related diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases. Pu-erh tea can inhibit oxidative damage to both lipid and non-lipid substances and can eliminate them. It can also inhibit oxidative production by cells. The water extract of Pu-erh tea can significantly inhibit lipoprotein peroxidation, thereby reducing the probability of atherosclerosis.Liver ProtectionPu-erh tea has a wide range of pharmacological activities. Recent in vivo and in vitro studies have found that Pu-erh tea has liver-protective effects. Long-term consumption of Pu-erh tea can protect the liver from oxidative damage. By regulating blood lipids, Pu-erh tea can significantly reduce the degree of hepatic fatty degeneration, thereby achieving a liver-protective effect.Other Pharmacological EffectsTea has long been known for its effects of refreshing the mind, relieving fatigue, improving vision, promoting diuresis, and cooling the body. The anti-fatigue effect of ripe Pu-erh tea is particularly notable. Some researchers have also preliminarily explored the anti-radiation effects of Pu-erh tea. Pu-erh tea also has anti-mutagenic and antimicrobial effects.
